Mobile Phone for comping only - Need to add top-up?

I've an old mobile phone which I'm thinking of using just for competitions. If I add a new PAYG Simcard will I need to add any funds to the card to make it connected? Especially every month and if I didn't use it to make any calls.

Most need an outgoing call every few months to keep them live

I use 1p mobile - top up £10 every 3 months, and I use any credit left on a few phone comps. Don't know of any that will keep you connected indefinitely for no money.

Tesco PAYG phone, last topped up £10 over 2 years ago, got £4.57 credit left - the only chargeable thing it is used for are the occasional Standard Network Rate texts for Tesco comps.
