Credit gift card showing zero balance

I was issued with a refund gift card on friday from a big supermarket chain.
Spent some of it there and then.
Just went to use it today in another branch and showing a zero balance. They said I have to go back to the store that issued it and take it up with them.
Anyone else had this happen to them?

Luckily enough saw the same person who issued the gift card.
He rang through to his manager who said as a gesture of goodwill they would issue another one.
I was a bit annoyed as there was no goodwill about it!! They could not explain why the balance was zero.
I think the manager could not be bothered to come down to deal with it to be honest.
Not happy but the alternative was to complain to Customer care and they would do an investigation.
This has made me very wary of gift cards now.
I made him print off again how much was on the card, did some shopping and made sure I got a print out of the balance left.
