Jobs and credit checks

Sorry if this is re post I am on mobile and don't know how to search and tbh the sites not exactly mobile friendly.

Anyway I really want to get some work in the new year currently been unemployed for 2 years roughly I do work with my dad carpet fitting but its not exactly what I want to.

I have experince in customer service and call centers and this is the route id like to go down.

however a lot of the big roles that I would like to apply for these days seem to require credit checks and stuff which rules me out of stuff like Samsung, o2, apple, capita, Lowell, finance and a whole host of other roles as I have bad credit and CCJ that are active and I'm not able to repay as I am on universal credit to top up my small income currently so I cant sort out the thing holding me back in my job search any advice?

  • For most jobs having struggled a bit with money is not going to exclude you.

Be honest, admit what happened, and try not to worry.

As above don't worry about the credit checks. They are unlikely to worry in a customer service role.

Actually if you are applying for the likes of Lowell you might be able to use your experience in the interview, for example saying that you have had financial difficulties in the past and you are able to empathise with the people you are dealing with.

Is there a way to find out what current CCJ and arrears I have and then address them?

I have found this to not be the case, most of the roles now have a credit check will be required for this role and I just discard the job

Almost certainly: worth heading to the Debt-Free board for more detailed advice, but working with a company like CAP (NOT one of the ones which charge fees!) would probably be very beneficial to you.

I work in a regulated job (insurance) I failed the credit check badly (32 defaults) but I had mitigating circumstances (good job and was managing my debts but then I got cancer and couldn’t work so couldn’t pay, said 32 accounts were written off but the defaults lingered) and they ignored it. Give it a try, you never know.

  • You never know until you try. All I can say is if at first you aren't successful, time is always a healer in matters like these.

I was clear of my 6 year problem and readily applied to an outsourced medium insurance broker paying the minimum for a wage and literally within weeks of knowing it had fallen off the credit report - fortunately my interview was taken by a 23 year old (l later found this out) therefore my debt history wasn't scrutinised - No wonder I got a rather blank look at the time!

I worked in an environment that was strictly scripted (to the point I was of the opinion people who enjoy rehearsing answers for an interview would do well) and had a thing about 'dead-air' in the end this is what killed it for me when my credit history was no longer the problem. I far enjoyed outbound telesales and a role with more autonomy then being another battery hen trying to pass/battle QA. Some of the ex insurance team leaders met in different industries were very right in that it just wasn't worth it, though, I will say instead of the scare stories in being escourted off the premises, a job being a no no and meeting so many barriers in the let me in! I did find the insurance company was one of the only few that tried to keep hold of staff and would preserve with you. And I guess because of any battle to get in, one would pride themselves getting another job before leaving.
