Class 3 is the appropriate category in your circumstances.
  • Many thanks DairyQueen.

I wanted to buy 2016/17 NIC and GOV help told me I had to ring 0300 200 3500 which I did. They told me they were busy and it might take a while - what's new - and then took me through a lot of security questions etc.

Finally, after 5 minutes, the voice said "we can't help you today, goodbye" and hung up :)

You don't know if there's any way I can do the top-ups online rather than phoning?

    Cheque by post?

If you do not have an HMRC payslip
    Include a note with:

your name, address and phone number
your Class 3 National Insurance contributions reference number (or National Insurance number)
    how much you’re paying
    the period you’re paying for
  • What's a cheque?

Oh yes, I remember, I even managed to find my last cheque book at the back of my "useful" desk drawer.

Looking at the stubs, the last one I wrote was 3 years ago :)

Enjoy the thrill of the novelty in writing one now?:)
