Sipp investment advice

There is nothing to stop you opening the sipp now, pay in whilst you learn, leave it in cash and benefit from the tax relief.0

I used an IFA to setup my SIPP because I was consolidating the remains of my Equitable Life pension and another previous workplace pension with Aviva. That was in 2012 and I had no clue at all about investments.
I no longer use an IFA and manage the SIPP myself. Although I use the term "manage" loosely as I only have a single fund in the SIPP, Vanguard LifeStrategy 60 and add to it in an adhoc basis whenever I have cash building up as I already have 20% salary sacrifice going into my employers workplace personal pension which is invested in a different fund.
Ongoing I will make my own fund choices, and plan to use the Vanguard SIPP when it becomes available as they have an ETF (VHYL) that I want to purchase that is not available with my current SIPP provider.
The single Vanguard LifeStrategy 60 fund has worked well for me and apart from the costs of the IFA Ongoing Adviser Charge the running costs have been reasonable.
Started on this path after coming across this blog by The Escape Artist. Latest post is worth a read.
Honestly, could this investing lark be any easier?!?

I have to decide at some point whether to open a Sipp and make my own fund choices or to use a robo type service such as Money Farm or Nutmeg.
I know i can research and pick various invesments for the Sipp but whether I would be making the right choices is another matter that is why I am also considering the robo providers.

Has anyone with limited investment knowledge eventually taken the plunge after doing some research, opened a Sipp and chosen their own investment portfolio for their Sipp? How has it worked out for you so far?
Did you use an IFA initially or just make the investment choices for the Sipp yourself?
