Tax code 1211l to 392l

I’ve had a change in tax code
I’ve been in the same job 13 years never an issue ever before

All of sudden November’s and Decembers pay are being taxed under code 392L non cumulative as opposed to 1211 cumulative

This has massively hurt me I’m now paying more tax and earning much less even when working extra overtime for example

September (1211L !!!)
gross was £3967
Net £3015

December (392L non !!!)
Gross £4217
Net £2783

Could anyone be kind enough to explain why?
Thanks in advance

Your notice of coding will show what the restriction is for.....could be anything, underpayment for previous year, new benefit in kind.
  • Also check with HMRC there is nobody wrongly been added to your tax file.
  • I’ve called today and appears due to my benefit in kind

My work failed to let HMRC know in April so have been backdated

I wouldn't be so sure this is a "failure" of your employer. There isnt usually any obligation to notify HMRC of a benefit in April. If you have a company car then there may have been an earlier point they should have notified HMRC but with a lot of benefits in kind an employer only has to notify HMRC by July following the end of the tax year.

If this is the first notification of your company benefits them it is quite normal for there to be a catch up period to start with.

It is possible your tax code will improve a bit from 6 April 2019.
