Selling your story - supply & demand

Hello,

I was thinking about selling stories about either myself or a family member to boost my income. Where would I look to find out what kind of stories are in demand at the moment and who to sell them to?

Some women's magazines will pay for true life stories.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

    Take a break?

There's always piles of 'em in my GP's waiting room. My baby was born with two heads. My husband was a cross dressing voodoo priestess. That sort of thing.:)

They only pay £50-100 a story.

And as pointed out above they are normally looking for the unusual or a unique twist

I’m told anthea turner’s autobiography was mostly a source of pulp, the publisher having vastly overestimated its likely popularity.

    True life stories?

There’s a man in this town who claims to be the real king of France. A few years ago he worked out he was the tsar of Russia. Somehow I don’t believe either claim was true, never mind both.

Some of them pay up to £2,000, a few recent classy stories include

Sister KILLED my perfect baby on boxing day

He stuffed another bird at Christmas so I roasted his chestnuts

I walked in on them! My GROOM was stark NAKED with the BRIDESMAID

She bit off my bits for not wanting a three-in-a-bed romp

Blowtorch maniac -Why did I give him a second chance?

Only had 1 story printed by a magazine , no payment as it was a smallish niche.

And it wasn't a " chickens stole my brother " sensational type story

  • Google 'Writers' and Artists' Yearbook'. Go for the 2019 edition, as it's out now.
If you're a good writer, then it doesn't just have to be about your family. If you're not a good writer, then no-one will be interested in what you write about your family.

And by 'good writer' I don't just mean knowing how to string a sentence to together: I mean understanding word counts, style guides, tone of voice, and what the market is looking for. If you've just read an article about 'aliens stole my husband', and think 'Wow, that happened to me, I could write about that' - think again. They've just done that story, they don't want another one, they want something different.

But it definitely works for some people. The yearbook is full of useful hints and tips on becoming a writer, as well as providing addresses and rates of pay for all magazine publishers.
