About to start DMP - advice please

Thanks fatbelly it helps me make more sense of the situation.
The car itself is an older BMW diesel - it should be doing 50mpg but it takes 75 minutes each way to travel 30 miles, so is a lot of stop start traffic - think I currently get 40mpg, and probably cover 20k miles per year including helping family out with shopping trips etc - maybe I need to cut down on these, and look towards getting a VW Golf or similar that should do 50mpg in stop-start traffic, that would be a decent fuel saving alone too.0
