Hi all,
Bit of an odd situation
I am currently working part time at a company 2 days a week and doing 3 days self employed.
I am currently going through disciplinary process in my part time role for breaking company policies and although I dispute this it looks like I will ultimately lose
I have an offer for a new job and need to provide a working reference and a personal one, am I okay to use some of the companies I work with in my self employed business as these are more in line with the new job?
Thanks a lot

You can use whoever you want; but if they've asked for your current employer, and you don't provide it; then I doubt you'd get past this stage0

Thanks for the reply, in my self employed business I am earning 2x my part time role and contracted out to 2 big companies which is why I was wondering0

That's fine. But they aren't employer references, theyre customer comments in effect.
An employer will want to know about things like disciplinary, sick leave, attendance, time keeping etc.
Your customer will just want to know the work is done.0 -
Could you not just say your self employed and leave the other job out? Then provide the employer before that at your more recent one?0

Doing that is lying by omission and wouldn't go down well with a new employer if they found out after the event. If they have asked for your employment history it is a high risk strategy to leave the current employer off.0 -
Did you include your current employer on your CV? If you did then they may consider it strange if they don't receive a reference from them.0

Yes you can. It shouldn't be a problem. Unless they specifically asked for the most recent employer, your reference meets the criteria so you should be fine at application stage.
Worst comes to the worst they will smell a rat and ask specifically for a reference from your current employer further down the line, in which case you might have to fess up and see what happens.
But I wouldn't bet on it. References are often procedural and a lot of places never bother to ask for them, or they are just chased by HR and never seen by the hiring manager unless there are issues.0 -

If you were an employer would you be happy if an employee hoodwinked you like this?
If you’re found out in 6 weeks or 6 years time I would expect most employers would question your honesty and would be within their rights to dismiss you.Originally Posted by shortcrust

Hi all,
Quick update on this with my part time job, as stated I am going through a disciplinary process, they wrote to me to say they had a meeting scheduled for December 31st but my union rep can not attend with me until the 3rd, I have let work know and they have said it cannot be changed
Do I have a legal right to be accompanied for this?0 -
Most people would want to hear from your current employer, as of course otherwise you would just pick the clients who were most pleased with you.helpneeded2019 wrote: »Hi all,
