NHS dental referral

I have 1 mar tooth left on back right corner. It requires root canal and at a specialist place due to curved root. I am with a NHS dentist.
Basically it started June/July 2018 and now i finally have a root canal appointment for Jan 2018. Now my dentist and specialists have said i need pre-root canal work which will cost band 2 plus! 1hr hygeinist appointment costing £100
Now i am not paying £160 total for 1 tooth, i am hoping specialists dont charge for band 2 again when i go for the root canal as well.
I am upset i am to be charged band 2 again for the pre-root canal work as i thought band 2 was all for 1 treatment no matter how many goes etc takes? But this was back in June / July and i cannot afford £100 for a hygienist i have just had her on the phone pushing the hygienst and refused saying i would do 1/2hr not 1 hr and she is due to call back telling me if 1/2 hr is ok.. what if she comes back pushing the hours worth? Please help with any advice

I am amazed that you have got a NHS referral for root treatment. In the vast majority of the country specialist treatment is only available privately and would cost upwards of £600.
Also bear in mind a root filled tooth will probably need to be crowned which is a band 3 treatment which will be ,depending on where you live , a couple of hundred pounds more.

In general hygienist treatment is private and the charges you have quoted sound private.

I think you need to check what is private ,what is NHS treatment and to understand if you have gum disease that needs treatment. Also if the tooth that needs root treatment will also need a crown, if you are not willing to spend the money on crowning it , it may be better to have it out, particularly if gum disease is affecting many teeth.
  • My NHS dentist also referred me to a specialist for root canal, mine was on an upper molar with a curved root. (She was happy to do it, but concerned she might not be able to access all of it, and I opted to go straight to the specialist instead of potentially going through the process twice.) His cost was £800, and I then had it crowned by my own dentist for a further cost. I didn’t need any pre-appointments or treatments other than the consultation with the root canal specialist, but his consultation fee was £50 on top of his treatment cost. It sounds like you are getting a good deal!
