Are smart meters o/s money saving?

  • I have the feeling that having a 'smart meter' plugged in and running isn't that smart a move I am a compulsive 'switcher offer' and only have permanently on, my stair lift, fridge freezer, fire alarm
I even turn off my computer thingy (not the technical term I know )when not on use see no point having wifi on if I'm not using it.My combined gas and electric debits per month is only £45 to First Utility and I am over £100 in credit at the moment which I don't mind as it will help to cover the chilly months of Jan/Feb. I have my bolier on for two hours a day for the hot water which is more than enough to cover washing up ,a shower and using my washing machine twice a week at most. The heating goes on as and when I need it I have excellent double glazing and roof insulation plus my walls are insulated as well and I live in a mid terraced cottage in the south of England. By next June I usually get a small cheque back from the utility company so I see no need to have something unnecessary running to tell me to switch the lights off.Another daft government initiative What loony tunes thinks these daft ideas up for goodness sake

Hello Sammy, nice to "see" you. I remember you from the days of Weezl and her challenges. Does the £87 for electric include some towards the arrears? If so and you are struggling, could you ask the electric company to reduce this?

I have to agree with JackieO, the best thing to do is to cut your usage. Rather than a smart meter, you need some selotape, card, string and a pen. Make signs that say "lights!" tie them to string and, using the tape, hang them at head height in every doorway. This might encourage less usage. I have turned of 8 unused lights this morning before 9:00am!

    Good luck with this, M2m.
