After working abroad for 30 years I will be retiring to the UK, do I formally have to notify HMRC that I’m back?

all depends on how your retirement income is paid....
    - untaxed pension?
    - overseas investment income paid gross?

Will you be claiming a state pension?

I'll be returning to the UK age 60. I have sufficient years for a UK state pension and am currently drawing down my SIPP at just under the PA.

Depends on a few things but, generally, you will pay tax on your foreign pension in the UK and not overseas. Investments will be taxed at the highest rate between the UK and the country in which they are based.

That’s a sweeping generalisation which will vary depending on which country your pension is coming from and whether it’s to do with public service or private.

Overall, yes, HMRC will almost certainly want a UK tax return from you and will want to know when you move back to the country. I’d recommend using a professional tax adviser with a good knowledge of double tax treaties, at least for the year of immigration.

On return to UK I will still be drawing down a UK SIPP without any tax to pay (under PA). No income whatsoever will be from overseas. All investments etc UK based, do I need to inform HMRC I’m home unless I have some tax to pay?
