MSE Poll: If you could cancel Christmas, would you?

Third time we've had the same poll on MSE.
It baffles me. Excepting for when kids are involved, nobody needs a magic button to cancel Christmas.
If you like Christmas then be happy, and if you don't like Christmas, don't do Christmas, just ignore the whole shebang entirely. It's not difficult or any big deal.
Most importantly, be happy with friends/family every day, don't wait for Christmas!
The real issue that needs discussing is why the poll results, and the question itself, suggest that so many people just follow the herd and can't make independent decisions/actions.

I think for extended families, celebrating Christmas is about having some kind of 'event' to hang a get together on that happens at the same time for everybody every year. Sure, in theory you can spend time together as a family anytime, but when people live all over the country, have work commitments etc it can be difficult to co-ordinate. Having a nationally recognised holiday with a certain status across a wide section of society that most people get some kind of time off work for is a good thing. An excuse to eat my bodyweight in roast potatoes one day a year guilt-free is also welcome.
Not bothered about the presents, decorations, music etc though. That can all take a hike.0
