My UK work life has been a bit erratic, as many years have been spent overseas.
This may complicate matters which is why you need to talk to The Pensions Service (or the Overseas Pensions Centre) before paying any voluntary contributions.

For example if you were working in a EU country or country with reciprocal agreements with the UK then some of the earlier calculations may be invalidated.

  • Thank you all so much for your input - I'll have a good hard look at the figures and see what I can manage.

I haven't been working overseas, so no reciprocal agreements to investigate. I will hopefully have some more full UK years of NI prior to SP age, but probably not the number needed - so expect to have to top up every now and again. Someone mentioned class 2 contributions for remainder of working age years, but I don't think I qualify for this - fairly sure it has to be class 3 NI? Would that be right?

Any other comments hugely appreciated - thanks folks
  • As an expat you can pay Class 2 National Insurance, and back-date it for six tax-years. There is a form to complete at the back of HMRC NI38 guidance available here:

Read up on the eligibility rules first, the main one being no significant gap (one week?) between working in the UK and working overeas. Make sure via covering letter that you emphasise Class 2's only. You will receive a letter expalining how much to pay for each eligible year, send off a cheque, job done.

Lots of expats have done this, one of the best investments you can ever make.
