Cycle front light recommendations needed please!

My wife and I both cycle as our only form of mechanised transport, and both our bikes have excellent front lights powered by hub dynamos. However, we'd also like to have a bar-mounted flashing white front light, so can anyone please recommend such a thing which is (a) reasonably priced and (b) totally waterproof?

    What is reasonably priced?

If you want dirt cheap the Chinese specials are usually ok on ebay for a few quid. Try Torchy the battery boy as he tests the lights and shows pictures of the output on his ebay site

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I have no idea what reasonably priced is. But reliability, specifically in wet weather, is what we're after - not lowest cost.

Most lights offer a blinking/flashing version but as lights vary from a few quid to upwards of 200, what you consider reasonable isn't necessarily what I would :)

I've never had an issue with Lezyne and if you want just flashing the below for under £10 would be fine, lightweight, waterproof, 60 hours on flash mode and 15 lumen output

Aldi often have some decent bike lights in stock as well - again budget but does the job alongside your main dynamo one

In 2009 I built a front wheel with a hub dynamo. I ftted Busch & Muller lights. I love the fact they are so maintenance free. A flick of a switch at any time and you have quality lights. However there is a bit of drag. When my commute went up to 10 miles I bought a Cateye Volt 1200 and a TL LD1100. It really is a brilliant powerful light with loads of good modes. If I ever forgot to charge it the dynamo is a great back up. The volt 1200 cost me £80. Some people can't believe I spent so much on a light. Compared to what motorists spend on their cars it seems cheap to me. I must say though that most of my commute was on unlit roads where the volt lit up the whole road. It could be overkill if you just want a flashing light.

  • Cycliq Fly12 Front light with integrated HD camera. awesome bit of kit for my daily commute. Light is nice and bright and the footage it gets is very clear.

  • I'd recommend a Moon Vortex. 50% off just now so it's very reasonably priced.

This is what we went for http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lezyne-femto-drive-front-light/

Excellent bit of kit, incredibly bright, seems to be about as waterproof as any bike light ever is, easy to fit and cheap too ...

I bought a Moon Meteor 200. Great light, good output for the size (tiny) and USB-chargeable, different steady and flash modes. It was my only light for an unlit 55-minute commute and worked well. Unfortunately, after about 6 months the flashing mode failed. I bought a new one (Meteor 250) which was even better, but on that the steady mode soon failed. I now have two lights, one for flash and one for steady, so no big issues, but I can't recommend them for durability.
