Single person discount council tax review

Options
Hi
Lets say i applied and gotten single person discount from 2013 till 2014. After 2014 I changed my status and cancelled the discount. Do you think it would be possible that now, ( in 2018) the council would contact me to say they were reviewing my discount in 2013-2014. And asking me to confirm my details? Or do councils only review those who are currently with the discount.

Also how often to councils review council tax discounts that have been awarded is it annualy or peiodically eg every 3 years.

Thank you

That seems very specific for a hypothetical question, is the council actually doing this? I imagine they could do it, but why worry about it if it's not happening?

The council can review and correct a discount award at any time, as far back 1993 if required. How and when they review is up to them.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Hi. Yup im worried on the potential of this happening, i hope they dont and only focus on current years.

Well if your council is cash-strapped, as most are, and they see this as a way to increase funds, it could easily happen. If your discount was applied correctly what are you worried about? And if it wasn't, perhaps you should start saving now.
