Key from Timpson doesnt work

Hi all,
Sorry if this isnt in the right forum:
I got a key cut at a Timpson while on holiday. I came home and tried the key and it didnt work! I took it to a little independant key cutting store and they said that it hadnt been done accurately enough.

Am I able to take it to another Timpson store (one that is closer to home) and get a refund?

Thanks

  • Only one way to find out and that is to go into your closest Timsons.

Problem is I think many of them are franchises, but until you ask you won't know.

I doubt you'll get a refund but if you take the key I'm sure they will tidy it up for you.

Then check that it fit immediately.

I've been stung by this twice: once nearly 30 years ago with a Chubb, and this year with a Yale, both independents and slapdash locksmiths. On the second occasion I took the key to Timpsons in a total hurry, along with the original and they cut a new set perfectly. They could see where the first copy went wrong - which I got a refund for from the locksmith that made it, along with a lecture on how I should have checked ASAP (I didn't, I took it straight to the EA down the road).

There are some people that just don't care about the standard of their work. You live and learn, and what I learned on that occasion is that a) Timpsons in Southend-on-Sea / Tesco is reliable, and b) the wider business model is one that I admire.

  • I had a Timpson key which wouldn't work properly. I took it to another Timpson (same town) and told them that whilst I tried to dig out the receipt.

The person looked at it for two seconds and didn't bother to wait for the receipt, 'yep, that's one of ours.' Not sure if they have standard stock or it's regional.

He tidied it up for me on the spot and ran a spare one 'just in case'.

Definitely give it a try. I've had multiple keys cut by them since then and all were fine so I'd definitely use them again. I hate having to return things but they were no hassle whatsoever to make it right.
