When do I resign?

Hi - I have been off work since June this year after a heart problem. Since then I have been on Statutory Sick Pay from my employer which is due to expire shortly. I am not yet fit to work but I know now that I will not be able to return to my job in the future. My employers have been good to me and I really don’t want to mess them around but I can’t afford not to get sick pay while I’m not working and I’m worried that if I tell my employer that I won’t be coming back that I will not be able to claim anything. Is anyone able to offer any advice on this situation please? Many thanks.

Do not resign. If you are dismissed on health grounds it is very possible that you will be due additional payment- for notice and for accrued holidays. There may be other benefits too. When your SSP runs out you will be sent a form by the employer which will enable you to transfer to other benefits. You do not need to resign. You shouldn't resign. When the employer decides to think about dismissal, come back here and we can talk you through the best approach.

Dont resign. As above. You will still get Benefts, just from another source.
You are accruing holiday all the time, so let your employer do the deed when they are ready.
    Good luck

If you post on the Benefits & Tax Credits Board the members there will be able to advise you as to which benefits you may be able to claim once your SSP runs out.

The next step once SSP runs out will normally be to claim either ESA or UC.
  • Thank you ever so much. It just feels like I can’t be honest with my employer and I’m finding that difficult but needs must at the moment. Thanks again.
