What do you think dismissal is if not disciplinary action?

    ???

There is more than 1 stage in a disciplinary, verbal warning, written warning, and final written warning. No one is going to get dismissed for a first offence of not following social media policy to the T.

There is no requirement to raise through a heirarchy of sanctions, if the employer advises that the outcome is up to and including dismissal then that is their decision.

Please point us to the legislation that backs up your opinion.

Oddly, an awful lot of employers do exactly that. There is no legal requirement to go through lesser stages before dismissal becomes an option. It can be the first stop!

A first disciplinary can and does lead to dismissal as an outcome.
  • The company has a disciplinary procedure that's how I know someone wouldn't get dismissed for a first offence of not following the social media policy correctly.

You would probably get dismissed on a first case if it was for theft but people have kept their jobs for worse things than the social media policy.

Also we are not the world's most hated airline either.

Well, I don't doubt what you say there. But I don't believe that companies are OBLIGED to follow that.... I think they can literally just sack you for whatever reason, particularly if you have been working for less than 2 years (and they haven't infringed on a protected characteristic).

Just because they have a process in place doesn't protect you 100%

Indeed. In fact, in my last place I knew of people who had:

    - Been kept on despite doing really bad things. The sort of thing which should have made their position untenable

    - Been sacked for minor, petty issues (usually tied to not liking them etc)

I personally don't like to speculate as to whether I would/wouldn't be kept on depending on certain things; I just try not to screw up to begin with!

But you could be the "world's most hated [insert your industry]". Sometimes you can be that WITHOUT KNOWING IT, as many dodgy companies fly under the radar these days (Ryanair and Sports Direct are two examples of companies who have been treated as scapegoats TO AN EXTENT; I mean the stuff they do doesn't endear them to the public, but a lot of companies do similar stuff and keep out of the limelight).

I very much doubt that will be true if an employee called the CEO of the airline a wife and child beating sexual pervert. They'd be out the door in jig time! There's always exceptions depending on the individual case.
