Uniform tax rebate, now owe HMRC

Hi, wonder if anyone can shed any light for me. I recently applied for a uniform tax rebate, for which I claimed £60 a year for 5 years. I received a cheque from HMRC for £232.84. Fast forward a few months to today and I’ve been posted a a tax calculation and I now owe £191.80. I’m PAYE and only claimed the tax back as per the rate the government website has stated for wearing a uniform with the company logo.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

what does the tax calculation give as the explanation, we can't read it from here and it may have nothing to do with the uniform rebate

if you claimed £300 (5x60) then the tax rebate would have been £60 (20%) or £120 (40% taxpayer). To have received 232.84 must mean you got something else as well, what was it?

You won't have got a cheque for 5 years refund as HMRC can only review the last 4 years. The 5th year will be the current year and this will be dealt with via a change in tax code to add the relevant allowance.

To have received a cheque refund for the previous 4 years, and to then receive a tax calculation a few weeks later would suggest that HMRC have received some further information from somewhere that wasn't available at the time they processed the uniform claim.

Are both tax calculations P800's. You should see this in the bottom left corner, or have you recently filed a self assessment?

If the latest calculation is a P800 then it should give a genetic explanation as to why there is an underpayment.

You should be able to see the difference by comparing the 2 calculations. What is it that's different?
