Full time wage and self employed income total £12,189 (£1003 of that is from self employment) tax paid on full time job £345 tax refund £196
I was previously part time and have since gone full time

sounds about right. This is for 17/18, so the allowance was slightly different to this year. But it's basically 20% of £700, which is £140.

The tax free allowance for last year was £11500

So you have to pay income tax on 12189-11500 = 689 (roughly Comms 700)

You have to pay 20% income tax on that £689. £137.80
  • the tax free allowance for last year is £11500. your earnings were roughly 700 above this, so you would be taxed 20% on the 700 = £140

Thank you i knew it wasn't right that they owed me i had set aside roughly £200 to pay but i cannot figure out where i have gone wrong on the forms, forgot to mention i added expenses of £45
  • £12189 earnings less £11500 personal allowance leaves £689 to pay tax on.

    £689 at a tax rate of 20% is £137.80

You've paid tax of £345 less the refund of £196 ie £149, which is £11.20 more than you owe. So you'd be due a refund.

HMRC have probably rounded the figures

    Looks about right to me.

    You haven't gone wrong:

    £345 tax refund £196

    £149 tax already paid.

    Don't worry it's fine.

You pay no tax on the first £11,500, then 20% (until the next tax bracket, which you're nowhere near)

In reality for the £11,179 you owed zero tax.
