Help with Warm Air Heating

Hi I have just moved into a 2 bedroom property with warm air heating. I have no idea on the best way to use it and as it stands it has cost me £60 for a month so far. Nearly double what it cost for storage heaters in my previous property. I just wanted some advice or info really on the most efficient way to use them. Is it best to use timers throughout the day or just switch it on as and when? I also wanted to know if it charges extra because I have my water set to the same timer? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
