Unexpected bonus

What should I do? I have just received £150 tax credits (didnt know I was entitled and only just claimed). So I have 3 options, pay it towards my credit card, pay it towards DD or buy a wardrobe for DD? I'm also getting £46 every 4 weeks so I could repay DD by the end of the month. However, its taken me ages to decorate her bedroom and the wardrobe costs £183. Hmmm, what does everyone think?

PS I dont even want to think about how much I could have claimed over the years :(

    Excellent what a bonus.

I think the sensible answer would be to pay it off the cc due to the interest but I think I would probably pay DD off first.

Good luck what ever you decide to do with it.

Why not buy the wardrobe to finish off her room - if she needs it - then pay her back, then overpay on the CC after that? You weren't expecting any extra money, so £46/m to throw at the debts will soon help it down...do the calculation & see your DFD change?

Skintscotslass Hi! Can I be a real pain and just dampen the mood a little:o
After having dealings with WFTC for a few years now I would not trust a bonus in any form misscalculation is common. Please wait a little while and ensure it is correct.Again sorry to be a wet blanket.

  • Thanks for that folks

Floss, DD has a hanging rail in her bedroom, so I really want to get her a proper wardrobe.

Madoldbat, I dont know anyone who hasnt had their tax credits messed up. So, while not relying on the £46, I intend to chuck that at the CC.

I'm trying to sell my car at the moment. The plan was to pay off GE Money £1,700 and buy the wardrobe with left over cash. I was hoping for around £2k for the car, but thats not looking likely. Still ebay finishes in an hour. I'll know then and decide then. Oh and I hadnt thought about the sales. Dither dither xx
  • Can I just throw my tuppence worth in here. I don't know what kind of wardrobe you want for your dd, but have you tried freecycle??
My dd has just moved into her first flat and I have been amazed at the stuff she has got from freecycle. Her flat is now almost fully furnished, with better quality stuff than I have and it was all bought new, hence the debt.

I can understand you wanting a new wardrobe for your dd, but would a freecycle one not be better than the hanging rail that she has at the moment, at least until funds improve.

  • Yes I agree about the tax credits. They get it wrong every single time! I owe them £2000 because they overpaid me, so I am not getting any now for 2 years until it is repaid. Grrrrrrr. It makes me so mad.

I don't know what to advise you. It would be nice for your daughter to have a wardrobe, but the debts are such a burden! Sorry I'm not much help.

Why not put the money in savings for a month or two, earn a little interest and then clear off DD or pay extra towards CC1
