We are really busy at work and my boss doesn’t want me to take my remaining 1/2 days i have a holiday as a half a day, instead he wants me to work 4 extra hours and take a full day of.

I would be working more than my agreed contract.

I don’t want to do it, just because he’s made up this rule now because it’s upset his spreadsheet (when we have an online system). Plus I have my sports practice and tv programmes.

    I told him no,

Absolutely fine, although as others mentioned companies have certain points they can control on holidays. The flip side is that you shouldn't complain if they do something by the book or are inflexible on a day you need leeway - unexpected lateness, holiday needed for a wedding etc.

Exactly, if employee wants a bit of leeway, then they should expect to be flexible and helpful where they can.

This forum is really on the side of the employer, until they are the one with trouble.

My contract doesn’t say anything about busy periods and I’m working outside my contract. My boss is just unable to keep his spread sheet up to date despite HR all being doing via a portal.

As I’m not getting extra time for working those extra hours and I have already had approved and booked all my holidays with HR and via flights etc:::: why should I be disadvantaged when majority of my team have taken 2/3 day of their holiday for the FY.

I also don’t see what the the leeway ? Because I’m coming into work for 2/3 of the day to keep on top of my work load and do stuff to assist other staff. Yet I’m being told to work extra hours despite having nothing to do for those extra hours. My work isn’t that busy, it’s ad hoc.

So again how am I being unreasonable for taking less days away from the business and not asking for anything in return?

    I'm confused.

You said you were asked to work 4 hours extra to make up a half day holiday to a full day. So work 4 hours, have 4 hours off.

What's it got to do with flights etc as they aren't cancelling any already booked holidays?

    How are you disadvantaged?

Not at all. This forum, like most of them on this site merely explain the facts. Sometimes they benefit the poster, sometimes they benefit the other party. Not our problem that they may not be what you want to hear but what would you rather be told, what the actual situation is or what you want to hear which may be as much use as a chocolate fireguard?

But why would you say to me to work more then my agreed hours at the benefit of my employer and not the business

Its not taking you over your hours.

For example if your doing 8hrs a day over 5 days, then your contracted to 40hrs pw. You take 4hrs each week as holiday, which means you worked just 36hrs of your contracted hours..

What your boss us doing is proposing is you work your contracted 40hrs this week and in exchange he's willing to let you work just 32 out of your contracted 40 hours next week

So you wouldnt be working more than your contracted hours by doing what your manager had asked.

You also have to bear in mind that your contracted hours are the minimum amount of hours per week the employer has agreed to provide you with, and the minimum number if hours you have agreed to work each week, not the maximum.

And its very likely their is a clause in your contract that would require you to work more hrs if reasonably requested to do so. its standard in pretty much all employment contracts and usually enacted during busy periods.

Also the employer does have the right, in law, to cancel prebooked holidays with reasonable notice.

I know that probably isn't what you wanted to hear. But that's the position your in where law is concerned.

If you concerned about missing football practice, talk to your manager about it, they may be able to figure out a solution.
