Employing an accountant for tax advice rather than double checking all my bookkeeping?

Hello there.

I run a business in partnership with my wife, and have come to the realisation that I might be able to cut down on my accountancy bill by employing one in a different way.

Until now my accountant double checks all my invoices and charges me more than I pay in tax. So I'm thinking I may be able to just employe someone for some advice instead. I have, in the past, done tax returns online (previous business). My business doesn't make a lot of money, and has some unused losses.

The main complication is the accountant I have been using isn't willing allow me to cut my bill in this manner, and I'm also a silent partner in two other business for which they also do the accounting. and for which I'm not involved in the bookkeeping. The other partners would want them to keep doing the accounting for these businesses, and they would pass me on the relevant partnership returns for my purposes.

I'm just wondering if any accountants offer such services? I think I need someone to offer advice on how to enter these historical losses, to minimise tax liability.

of course you can find someone to do what you want, it is just a matter of looking and then. naturally, understanding the extensive disclaimers they will use over the integrity of your data. That also of course should cause you concern since it is precisely what you are willing to accept anyway

your current accountant does not a) want to lose the fees for the extra work done and b) lose the comfort of knowing they are fully vetted books.
Other accountants will and do behave differently.
