Commission pay while on Holiday?

Hi all,

I've received a job offer from this company and the basic is OK and they have told me I can earn roughly another 30% commission on my wage each year....if i'm off on holiday that will massively affect my income and I wondered has anyone heard of or work for this company?

Hamilton Wood & Company

I have kids and can't afford to loose pay if I take them on holiday.

Thanks.

Since recent ECJ and EAT rulings commission has to be included when calculating holiday pay for the very reasons you're afraid of taking a holiday. You have no choice about taking holiday, legally an employer must make you take it at some point during the year or they're in breach of the Working Time Directive.

You may want to post on the debt free wannabe board for advice if your finances are so tight that a week or two of slightly lower wages causes so much grief.

As it's sales they will probably have blanket bans on some periods and I expect that others will be readily available.

I'm not familiar with the company but I'd say it depends on the commission structure.

If for example you receive x% of total sales from your accounts (ie, they place orders without your ongoing involvement but you originally set up/inherited the account - think account manager), I have always been paid this irrelevant as to whether I took any holiday that month.

If for example you receive x% of each sale (ie, every time you sell you a product direct to a customer, you receive a percent of the order value - think sales rep), you wouldn't receive any commission during period of absence as you're not actively selling.

If it's former, I've had no issues with commission in the past though that's not to say it's the same for every company, I guess there's no way of knowing without asking (which granted, doesn't look great).

Tarambor gave some great information also and is right, worrying about a minor fluctuation in pay highlights a more sinister issue.
