Selling belongings?

I've decided to put this into the Boost Your Income bit as I suppose that's what I'll be doing but basically...

I've decided to sell pretty much everything I own.

I've done some googling about this but wondering if anyone has any first hand experience on what to sell where? For example do you find you get more for furniture on Gumtree v Facebook Marketplace.

Thank you in advance!

I find that eBay earns me the most because it has the biggest audience. However, you have to take into consideration fees. I usually start with Facebook and then move on to eBay if I can't sell items.

Depending on the item I normally start with eBay then Gumtree and Music Magpie. If it dosent sell I usually offer it to family or take it to a local charity shop.
  • Or small stuff could be good for a carboot? tend to sell lots on the approach to xmas
  • I start with Facebook, Gumtree and Freeads. For collectibles I go down to the local market and sell them to antiques and secondhand dealers. For retro stuff that's been hanging around a long time I use Vintage Cash Cow. I've been trying to sell clothes through Cash for Clothes but I can't even get them to send me a bag so I'm trying another site called Genie to get rid of clothing.
    Don't mess with pensioners.
  • Can I ask why?
If it's to achieve the karma that comes from a simplified existence, then fair enough.

But if it's because you need the money, then stop and think for a moment. If you sell something that needs to be replaced, then you are just giving money away. Things always sell for a lot less than you paid for them, and at some point you are going to have to buy a similar item again.

So only sell the things you don't want/need - and if you are indeed selling them because you need the money, then don't give them away to a charity shop or family!!
For furniture, try a local auction - they don't just sell antiques!

I've been trying to do the same since August but as my possessions are low value it has been a lot of work for very modest returns. I also worry that HMRC will not accept that I'm selling off my personal possessions (So no tax due) due to the volume of items on offer

Depending on where you live Shpock is a good place to try as well.

However, furniture unless it's something really special has very little value, brown furniture in particular is near impossible to give away.

    large bulk items....Facebook

    smaller items..... eBay!

Remember to work out fees and postage costs.

For items larger than a toaster, it'll be cheaper to send via myhermes, than royal mail and they pick it u from you to!
