Adding a partner when remortgaging

I am currently trying to re-mortgage my property (and have been doing so since June). I want to add my partner to my mortgage at this time but have just been told (5 months after the initial application) that they will not do this until we have paid them £350 solicitors fees. This seems quite a high amount and also I feel that this should have been mentioned at the beginning of the process. Has anyone else had any experience with this kind of thing?

  • I am in the middle of the same thing.

As I understand it, the adding of a partner to the deal is classed as a transfer of equity and does require the involvement of a solicitor. However, my mortgage company allow me to select the solicitor and hence I can shop around for the best deal.

Yes - I had to organise a transfer of equity to get my partner off the deeds... we had to have seperate solicitors (to avoid conflict of interest), so it was actually closer to around £600 (with my own solicitors).

The only way to avoid transfering equity is to sell your house, then buy it again with a brand new mortgage!

I was added to my partners mortgage with C&G quite a few years ago. There was £100 admin fee if I remember rightly but this may have been waived.
