City of London Corporation

I’ve been offered a job working for City of London Corporation at Guildhall, central London. Is this a good organisation to work for? I’m currently working for Barking and Dagenham council for the last 14 years.

Check on the Glassdoor website? Although personally, I'd have been checking this before applying.

It's the people you work with - your colleagues and boss - rather than the organisation you work for, which is more important. Every time.

    People leave people, not companies.

I've eaten at their canteen, which I can fully vouch for, and met one of the teams there who seemed pretty friendly. I remember that a few of them had been there a startlingly long time, which I guess is a good sign, and they seemed to know what they were talking about.

You work for a council so you probably already know the score with these kinds of places (crusty old IT systems and a lot of over empowered admin staff slowing things down).

    Really? When was that? 1923?

You'll be lucky if you can find admin staff in councils these days - they were the first to be cut to the bone with austerity. Most people, except those at the very top of the structure, must do their own admin. Over empowered? Highly unlikely.

OP, asking whether "a council" is a good place to work is like asking whether the galaxy is a nice place or not. Every council has great managers, great services, and great teams. They won't admit it but they also have the exact opposite! There are thousands of employees in a typical council. Besides which, what's your definition of "good"? There's a certain council (the one where I live) where working in the Parks is a great job. You can hide in your cab, read the paper or go online all day, and never get caught. You'll never need to do a stroke of work. In the council next door you will be sacked (and people have been) for doing the same thing. I know which one I think is great....
