Grant for charity

I volunteer for a local church , which is registered as a charity, and help run their Job Club on a weekly basis. I help run the meetings and also run their Facebook page. This takes up about 15- 20 hours a week. They have suggested that the organisation could get a grant so that I could be paid a weekly wage.I need some advice on where we can get funding for this. Thanks.

The church itself might be the place to start. Doubt you'll get anything from local or national government. Or increase the charity's fundraising activities!

There's a specific forum on here for "Small Biz. & Charities". Probably better off asking in there, no?

Can't help on sources of funds, but well done for volunteering and helping people.

The church could access funds to employ someone although it is sometimes difficult to get revenue funding.
It is easier to get funding for capital costs or specific projects.
A good source is the National Lottery assuming the church is not against accepting money from gambling.
Have a look for a local voluntary sector group or network as they can often help with funding.

Are you part of a national charity, eg I believe CAP run job clubs. If so, worth asking them.

Also google 'volunteer' plus your town / county / city and see if your local volunteer bureau can help: ours has access to grant finding software and you can book a session. Put in your parameters to see what's available, eg some grants aren't available to churches / faith based organisations.

One word of warning: grants can be quite tightly tied down, and it can be easier to get funding for a set period for a new project rather than ongoing funding for an existing project. Don't expect this to be a one-off piece of work.

  • As it will be ongoing, bear in mind that you will go from being a volunteer to a paid member of staff with all that entails

Why would they simply decide to give you the job? Especially since most funders would never permit such a thing to happen - it would demand open recruitment, and honestly, if you don't know the answer to your own question I'd be looking to employ someone with the development knowledge and sustainability skills to know the answer! And that's spiraling as someone with an awful lot of experience in the charity sector.

If you are only doing this to create a job for yourself, then I'd suggest that you are not really considering the development needs of the organisation.

Sangie has made some good points. OP, if your church is part of a larger denomination, look up the ladder a bit for help. My denomination has lots of advice on recruitment, they operate some grant schemes themselves, have people to help put applications together and develop projects etc.
