Cheapest butter?

Hi everyone, I am trying my hardest to get out of debt and have cut my budget so much. My biggest savings I can make tend to be on food shopping, but as a mother of a hungry hollow legged fussy teenager I find I spent a lot on snacks! ok maybe not a lot to most people but more than I'd like to! So I've decided to try and make more things from scratch that he can snack on. I'm finding lots of the sweet and savoury snack recipes he'd eat contain butter but I find butter very pricey! I currently shop in Aldi does anyone know where I'd find cheaper or even bulk bought cheaper butter to help me reduce the costs of my DS's snacking habits!
Many thanks :D

  • Hello Poppy 1984 - I know that 'butter' is the BEST and MOST NATURAL of all the spreads, but does it have to be that - or, in view of your current finances, would something else do ................... even if it 'just for the time being'?

Currently - SmartPrice Butter in ASDA is £1.45; Tesco's cheapest is £1.50; Aldi's is £1.49 ................ so there's not much difference in the prices. Of course, butter is usually quite difficult to spread (especially on bread) - so maybe a 'Spreadable' version would be best suited for sandwiches.
  • Unless there is an offer elsewhere I find Lidl/Aldi to be the cheapest.

Spread it thinly, I have never found it difficult to spread.

Do not be tempted by whatever is on offer as some sort of butter substitute, e.g. engine oil mixed with face cleanser and extra virgin olive oil.
Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid

  • Hi thanks so much for the replies, just butter for baking not to use with sanwhiches or on toast I use cheaper spreadables for that.
I don't know if cheaper butter substitutes would work in baking things like buiscuuts, flapjacks, scones, cakes etc has anyone got any experience of this?
Also any recommendations of frugal recipes for snacky bites would be gratefully recieved :)

  • For baking, I like to use 'Block Stork' for pastry and scones or 'Tub Stork' for sandwich cakes.

I'm not sure if there's still a 'Mega Recipe Thread' on here - I know that there used to be quite a number of years ago.

I remember somebody posting recipes for things like 'Cheese Straws/Twists'. And there was a fabulous recipe called 'Twink's Hobnobs' - very good 'oaty cookie type biscuits' that would disappear as soon as hungry folks sniffed them ;)!

I do just the reverse - margarine for cakes and biscuits but butter for sandwiches/toast.

Honestly, I would go with filling cereal (porridge oats / non-branded supermarket "Weetabix" etc) and also popcorn mixed with value crisps and thinly sliced carrot discs. Very inexpensive and will keep him munching for hours!

Either that or cut out snacking altogether: harsh, but he'll get used to it within 3 days. However I wouldn't go down this route unless you are prepared to do the same yourself!

  • I use Morrisons Soft Spread for Baking (£3.10 for 2kg), perfect for cakes, butter icing and pastry.
  • As someone who's played about with baking with budget butter recently, I would definitely say Stork for baking.
