Well I dont know what to say. Lots of people I know catch things all year round. Upset stomachs, flu are the most common. How can you go to work with those? Besides I work 12 hour nights so how can you do that not feeling well.

I don’t think I’ve ever had flu. I’ve had colds sure, and coughs and splutters and general run down feeling, but not the flu.

My teacher in school had flu. Didn’t leave bed for 2 weeks and lost about 2 stone in weight. I wouldn’t mind having the flu, beats the gym!

Again apart from norovirus I’ve never had an upset stomach so bad I can’t go to work, I am fairly decent with hygiene and food prep but I do go out to eat and have takeaways so not an angel.

I know but what I find confusing I have achieved the kind of sustained attendance they asked of me at the last meeting. And my score did go back to zero. So why constanly pick on a person who is obviously trying to not be absent? My old company was nothing like this 😠

It’s not really normal to be off sick every year. I’ve been working 11 years, and not counting totally skiving sickness as a student I’ve had 2 periods of sickness in 8 years. One lot of norovirus and one ear infection where I couldn’t drive.
I think most of my colleagues (small employer) have at least one period of sickness over the course of a year, and I know I do! Not that I aim for it, but if I am not well enough to do my job properly, I stay home.

To the OP: they may have made a mistake, but whether or not you consider it reasonable or not, if they invite you to a meeting, you go.

I have to meet my LM on every return to work to discuss whether I could prevent a recurrence. If I could, believe me I would!

It does sound a bit harsh to restart the process with three days off, but I guess they think that you're a repeat offender over the years and now you've had the year without sickness you think you can have time off again. I expect they'll ask why if you can go the year without time off you've had time off now that that has elapsed.

Or it could be that the new kid in HR didn't calculate it properly.

Either way I think they probably just want you to know that they're serious about your absence. You won't know until you go to the meeting.

You haven't had flu, flu like symptoms possibly, but not flu.

The Bradford Scale and variations of, is a management tool to monitor, measure and address sickness absence.

Wow I am speechless. Congrats on the cast iron immune system you must have. That wasn't meant sarcastically, I am genuinelly in shock how anyone can avoid the constant wall of sickness that seems to be always around me. Even where I work there are worse sickness records than mine. I guess it must depend on where we live and work. Maybe doing shift work reduces immune systems.

I had flu once. I was nigh on unable to walk, eat, or do anything else for two weeks. I wasn't completely over it even after two weeks, but thought I was close enough. Spent several weeks dragging myself to work, breathing getting worse. Ended up with a chronic chest infection and pneumonia. Three days is a cold, not even a bad one.

It does - my employer is very aware of the impact of shift working on fatigue and resilience. But that's my employer, not yours.

I would suggest that, rather than asking a bunch of people on the internet who don't know your employer and don't know what your contract says about sickness, you attend the HR meeting and take along the data you have - your previous sickness dates, the details of the meeting at which you were told after a year your 'score' returns to zero, and any contract or sickness policy document for your workplace. Then see what HR have to actually say to you.

Be prepared and go to the meeting.
Get copies of your sickness record from 14 months ago and what they said then (it was in writing?)
Go to the meeting and ask to check their records, I suggest you say politely that you think they may have made a mistake.
Whatever the outcome make sure it is clear what they intend going forward and if they don't give it in writing, you should email them to confirm (evidence if there should be a next time).

  • Here's a guess. And it's only a guess, and I'm not assuming anything or accusing you of anything. I'm just making a guess so you can think about it and prepare a defence.

The employer told you not to have any sickness absence for a year. And you managed this (I agree it's difficult!) Is it possible that from the employer's POV, the MINUTE (ok, very shortly after) the year was up you had 3 days' sick leave? They might think this is taking the p.

Again - this is not an accusation! It's just one way of looking at the situation, and one it might be useful for you to consider so you can prepare yourself for any related accusations.
