I brought the wrong house - advice please

I brought a house 6 months ago, my first home, because i thought it ticked all my boxes.
Its close to where my mum lives, and I wanted to be close to her at the time because she's been going through a messy divorce.
Its lovely, a barn conversion, 2 bedroom detached house, really quaint and quiet.
In a great part of town, near the shops... However, it has an enclosed front courtyard. Not a garden.

I've got a border collie, and we go on long walks every evening, but I leave him in the house during the day and recently he's begun to destroy my furniture.

In hindsight, what i needed was a small house with a nice large garden for him to run about it when i'm not there, he used to spend his days outside when I lived with my mum but now he can't because my courtyard is at the front and the post box is inside the courtyard... if i get a delivery and they open the gate i know he will bolt. I cant keep leave him locked up in the house as its not fair on him.

I dont really know what I should do, is it right for me to want to move? My mortgage is portable, so thats not really an issue, but I feel like moving so soon isnt done?

Has anybody been through anything similar and can give me some tips on what to do?

Long walk before work, employ a dog walker to break up his day, leave him plenty of toys and other things to play with (kongs filled with doggy peanut butter and frozen over night).
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

Move the post box outside the courtyard.
  • A border collie left on its own is always going to be a bored, unhappy dog, doesn't really matter if it's inside or outside.

Basically the house is fine, the problem is the dog, can't you leave him at your mums during the working week?

If he's a collie then it may be that long walks are just not enough. They can run for hours and not get tired.
He needs mental exercise and stimulation to tire him out - he's clearly getting bored during the day and mental exercise tires a dog out far more than walks ever will.
If you have a look at the pet forum there's been threads with lots of ideas to keep dogs stimulated and moving isn't necessarily going to solve the issue. You could just have a bored destructive dog in another house.
Get dog walker coming in at lunchtime for now, do some training with him before and after work (trick training, go find, whatever) leave him with stuffed kongs to occupy him when you are out). Then maybe you won't need to move.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Hi firstly don't worry if you have changed your mind happens all the time I work in a call centre and I am first point of contact when a customer wants to port sometimes it's the same month they complete good thing to take into account although your mortgage product is portable it will be a full application again unfortunately including affordability searches legal work valuation on new property etc. So bare in mind just because you already have the mortgage doesn't mean it is guaranteed to be accepted again for the same amount especially if any other credit has been taken out since.
  • Hi All, thanks for your ideas!

I would leave him in my Mothers garden but she doesn't like Dogs and doesn't want him there.

Just a difficult situation really because he's always been so well behaved, its been the last 2 months where he's just... not... at home.

I just want whats best for the both of us, and at the moment I don't see it being in the house. I feel like i should have thought it through a bit more and just got somewhere with more space instead of having him locked up in the house. I used to live in rented accomodation with him in the garden and he loved it!

I come from a family who have always had these big working dogs that live outside in the day but come in at night so i do feel like I've done the wrong thing moving somewhere with no outside space.

I also think I'd prefer a back garden for my own sanity as well, its a bit strange wanting to sunbath (when we occasionally get the sun here in the UK) and having to sit more or less in the road lol!

Anyway, it's not really to do with my dog, he's my world and I'll figure it out with him again.

I just think i made a very rushed decision to be in this house due to the proximity to my mother and now I'm in a place that's not right for me or my lifestyle.

Also my mothers got a new boyfriend so she's never home anyway! Wondering why I bothered moving near!

Sorry to complain, just looking for some advice, its my first time owning, i'm only 22 & I can't really talk to my mum about it until i know what i want to do as she'll be upset that i want to move away again!
