Hate to think what would happen to OP in a more challenging role

Are you claiming that you would be able to everything the OP lists in their post with just 30 minutes training?

Unlikely within 30 minutes. However, the OP's now been at it for 19 hours over 4 shifts, so one would hope is getting a bit better at it.

Everyone makes mistakes when they're new to something or when they're nervous etc. Making different mistakes is understandable, and part of the learning process. But if they're making the same mistake over and over again.....

    No, I didn't claim that.

  • Hi at @ReadingTim and @AndyDownes. Rest assured, I know what to do now for the majority of those scenarios, as I said in my reply to Les79. My bigger concern is the mistakes I made along the way and the burden it put on other staff. There was one scenario where a man wanted to pay with his credit card and I accidentally pressed the wrong button, as a result the a superior member of staff who worked in the office had to jump in and save me, she didn't look impressed afterwards. I suppose I am worried the mistakes I made whilst trying to figure it out will come back to haunt me later down the road. Will it make my employment with the company uncertain etc. As I said, I have learnt from my mistakes. But it seemed they wanted someone who could just breeze through it from the way they interacted with me.

Please don't worry. You do your best and it'll come soon enough, promise. Everybody has or will have in future a similar experience. Not everyone are great managers or are patient with new people...people can, and often do, forget that it was once them. The workplace can be brutal and not as soft as say education...sometimes the pace is frantic and nerves are frayed. Just do your best.

Suspect they'll be forgotten just as soon as someone else new starts, and makes the same sorts of mistakes...just try not to roll your eyes when it's you doing the "saving" of that person!

Thanks for the encouragement @AndyDownes.I am going to stick at it, the more I get wound up with myself the more determined I am to get it right, I never felt determination quite like it. The job means a lot to me as it is my first job. My mother can't work due to severe disability so a lot is riding on me maintaining and keeping a job, we would be destitute otherwise. Not only that, but I want to start building up my experience and getting on in life. That is why I am so stressed and over-worrying about everything. With it being my first job it is just a bit of shock to the system, on many levels. It is a learning curve being given so much responsibility like this and I don't want to let the company or my colleagues down. What everyone has been saying on here though has put my mind at ease somewhat.

    Thanks.
