Finding work without sufficient references...is it possible?

When I was recruiting staff in my previous role it was company policy to obtain 2 references. If I ever came across someone who only had 1 professional reference I'd ask that they provide a second character reference from a non relative. It could be an educational reference, somewhere where they had volunteered or a religious group, club such as cadets or sports club etc.
Everyone has to start somewhere! At some point everyone has a first job. Don't let this put you off.0
