Teeth whitening trays painful

Hi, my previous teeth whitening trays had been been washed in too warm water so lost some of their shape so I had new ones made by my dentist but they are very uncomfortable.

They seem to pop off my teeth at night which has made the whitening result very uneven. It feels like my teeth are too big for them but the shape is correct and they are custom made. Is there anything I can do to make them less uncomfortable - preferably not washing them in hot water to loosen them off! Thanks.

  • I recently got a new night guard for clenching (same principle) which has needed a couple of adjustments because it was a bit snug round some teeth and made them achey. My dentist reduced some of the contact points, a bit like sanding it down. It just took a few minutes. I knackered my previous one after dropping it behind the sink and “sterilising it” with virtually boiling water!

    Go back to the dentist

If you try anything DIY, then if you mess it up, you'll have to pay for new ones.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks it felt ok at the dentist but leaving it in for a longer period hurts. Back to the dentist I go!

Whitening trays are usually ok. But in the dental chair you really only get to try it for a minute at best. This can be completely different to a whole night, or several nights in a row. If anything ever seems amiss with anything fitted by a dentist, always go back rather than trying to fix it yourself.
