  • Recycle them at Tesco. There's a bin at the entrance.

We never wasted a free supermarket carrier bag - they became our bin liners. Now we have moved to reusable carrier bags we have to buy our bin liners. It was never plastic bags that were the problem - it was the people who use them.

We use paper carrier bags to store our vegetables.

We also used to store all manner of things in the supermarket bags but found that they would eventually biodegrade (fall to pieces) in our cupboards.

Alas, falling to pieces isn't quite the same as biodegrading; the hundreds of little pieces are still active pollutants rather than having been absorbed into soil.

  • We also used to use carrier bags to line the kitchen bin. But I refuse to buy bin liners.
Instead we now use various containers and bags that will be going to waste anyway. (Our council only collects plastic for recycling in the form of bottles so we have trays, yogurt pots, margarine tubs, veg bags etc that I simply have no option but to throw in the black bin).
These have become the new rubbish receptacles in my kitchen pedal bin. They don't fit properly or look nice but the lid closes so I am not really bothered.

Our council is the same :(
However, my daughter lives in an area where the council takes all these so I collect mine up and they go in her bin :)
In return, I take her shredded paper as I can dispose of them in my food bin and her council don't take shreddings :D

Please, please, please give them to your local Foodbank. Our clients rarely remember to bring bags with them and we like to send them out with a random lot of supermarket bags so it’s normal’ looking and not stigmatising. Put useable bags in your local food collection bin please. Thank you. 👏👏👏👏😘
