My understanding is that HMRC receives details of interest paid on personal accounts directly from the banks and building societies so I am confused as to why they have written to me asking for details of all interest, bank names and sort codes and the last four digits of the account codes of my savings.
I've never done a self-assessment and don't come under that category and I've never been asked to give this level of detail before even when claiming back tax (ie they only asked for total amount of interest.) If they get the information from the banks/BS why are they asking me? No-one else I've spoken to has had to do this.

My personal tax account doesn't show bank input. There is a figure under the PAYE section for other income, but that's based on what I put in last year's self assessment.
As to why they're asking you, has anything changed in your tax affairs this year?0 -
Have they written to you out of the blue or did you initiate contact in the first place i.e. ask about a refund or make a claim for something?
If the former then seems odd.
If the latter then maybe they haven't got the information yet, the banks don't have to send it until the end of June (according to gov.uk) so maybe they are still working through it all?0 -
You will need to check their interest figures carefully anyway, so will need to keep your own records. they calculated mine at less than a third of what it should be, despite all the accounts being with the same banks they had always been with. I tried every permutation & couldn't get near their figure. Remember if they get it wrong it is your fault!0

1. Are you sure that this is really from HMRC?
2. Why did you use "Personal savings allowance" as the thread title?
There may be others who've experienced this sort of request - but with that thread title - you'll never know.0
