Does Black Friday Offer the Best Deals?

I've been creating a list of things to look out for in the Black Friday sales, as I am assuming that this is when I will find the best deals this side of Christmas. But I wonder if I am being duped? Does Black Friday just have a reputation of bringing great deals, when in reality it's just a ploy to get people to shop because they assume they are getting a bargain? Should I be holding out for other sales closer to Christmas? Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated!
