VAT on exported vehicle

Options
I have recently bought a pickup that I am to export permanently out of the UK. The pickup was advertised exclusive of vat. When negotiating with the seller, he refused to sell to me at zero rate because I did not have proof of exporting and was afraid HMRC would come after him. He advised I could get vat back from HMRC after shipping.
I have now looked but I cant see where to claim vat for an exported used commercial vehicle. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

Comments

  • Not in my current situation unfortunately because I have already bought the vehicle. If the dealer had given me the VAT410 form, it would have been another story.
  • So is there a way to claim from HMRC after I have already bought the vehicle and exported it? The invoice does show vat.

At risk of asking a silly question, what did the HMRC VAT section say?

You mean on their website? It's hard decipher their language but there's no option on how to claim back VAT.

no he meant when you phoned them and asked to speak to a technical officer (not the call centre generalist that will answer)

meantime, assuming this was purchased as a personal transport, the rules state:

2.4 If VAT is shown on the customer’s invoice
A vehicle purchased at a price including VAT will not be eligible for a refund even if the customer later exports it to a destination outside the EU.

Thanks. I will try for a technical officer and hear what they say. Otherwise it looks like will require divine intervention to get that money back.
