Buying meat and fish online

I do an online grocery shop monthly but buy meat and fish from the shops.

I'm wondering if buying it online would be easier but I'm wary of how fresh it would be. Does anyone buy theirs online?

  • We buy ours from muscle foods, have had no complaints so far and it actually tastes like meat.

I've bought frozen from Donald Russel, and fresh from the Well Hung Meat Company. Orders arrived in polystyrene boxes with dry ice, and were perfectly OK.

I used to buy my meat online but it was very hit and miss. If you get a picker who works as if it's their own shopping then that's fine, but some pickers just pick the first one they see and I've had to get a refund on a lot of meat packs over the years.

(This also applies to other stuff of course, yesterday I received sweet potato in place of leeks!).

I buy from Muscle Foods or go to the local supermarket now.

I wouldn't buy any fresh produce online from Ocado or Sainsbury's.

I have done in the past. I've had too many problems with short sell by dates.

If I was again without a car and working ridiculously long hours I suppose I might have to.

The last time I ordered from Ocado, they failed to load something that I desperately needed, and I ended up having to go to Sainsbury's anyway.

I use Sainsbury’s online all the time and have never have an issue with quality or dates (and I am extremely fussy). Occasionally there has been produce that has had a short date on it and they will tell you on delivery so you can choose to keep if you’ll use it in time, or return if not. I’ve had a couple of times where the drivers have been kind enough to process a refund as if I was returning, but then let me keep it anyway.

I usually pick up a few of the 3 for £10 in either Asda or M&S when I get a lift to either. I have bought from Donald Russell - first order was fine second order arrived thawed out and considering I am about an hour or less away from them it must have gone on a mystery tour of the Highlands. They replaced it and told me I could cook everything and then freeze it. It was a large order and I had every pan and dish and roaster and slowcooker in use and had quite a job to get it all into my freezers.

i use fishbox for fish (you can have a one off or monthly, bi monthly etc...) where you can set your preferences to avoid receiving any fish/seafood that you dont like or wont use. They are very good quality and fresh and i find good value or musclefood for meat - this seems to be a little hit and miss if you buy a hamper (contents wise there are sometimes items i woulnt have picked by choice), however in saying that they often have various options to choose

I've never had a problem with fresh meat from Sainsburys and have used them for home deliveries for many years. If you are concerned check the appearance and dates on the meat before the driver leaves and return it with them for a refund if you're not happy. I've used Asda in the past and the quality was shocking, I'd always be asking for a refund for something or I'd open a pack and it would be off.

Oh, and muscle food was terrible. Had to get a refund for most of it, the quality was shocking.
