GDPR and store returns for someone else?

I asked a family member to go to Evans cycles to return an item for me with all of the correct paperwork, my bank card, and pin. They refused because of GDPR. Is this a legitimate reason? I have willingly given the family member all information so there's nothing left for the store to accidentally share.
After contacting customer services one person said they wouldn't help, another said I could phone the store to 'complete a GDPR' 😒 (is that even a thing?!) then the store may allow the return.
Has anyone faced a similar issue in another store since the ruling?
