Our household has accumulated a number of old hard spectacle cases. The opticians wont take them for charity recycling - they only want the actual spectacles. Is there any useful domestic purpose to which they can be put before we dispose of them? (They're the snap open/shut type, not the ones where you just slip the glasses in)

I would think a charity shop would snap them up (no pun intended!).
I buy them from c/shops because I get reading glasses and sunglasses in TK Maxx and they don't come with a case.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

The op's optician won't take the cases only the specs.
OP - try Specsavers if they weren't the optician you used otherwise donate to charity.“You’re only here for a short visit.

Hi, I'm an optometrist and we unbox any donated specs before sending them off to Vision Aid Overseas etc. It's because of the cost of shipping/the extra bulk caused by the cases. If you donate them to Specsavers, they'll probably end up in the bin. I'd drop them at a charity shop if they are in good nick, otherwise they make handy first aid kits for handbags. I have an empty spec case with painkillers, plasters, gauze, tweezers etc in it.MFW 2019 #61: £13,936.60/£20,0000

they make handy first aid kits for handbags. I have an empty spec case with painkillers, plasters, gauze, tweezers etc in it.
I do this and have one with Savlon and plasters and a small pair of tweezers/scissors which I put in my suitcase when going on our family holiday, and another one with some painkillers, indigestion tablets, hayfever and tummy bug tablets.
Easy to slip into the side pocket of my big grip which has a zip to close it and everyone knows where the quick first aid stuff is if needed on holiday.Saves wasting holiday cash on over-the -counter remedies.0 -
I find them useful for storing all sorts of items like mp3 player and earplugs, mini manicure set, emergency sewing kit. As mentioned, first aid kits, daily medicines even little items that would roll about in your car glove box. They are very strong and useful for anything that is sharp or and odd shape. Hope that gives you some ideas...The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Apart from being great storage ( I have usb's in my spare) they are always looked for in charity shops by those that don't always need to wear glasses0

Another person here who uses them for storage - generally for USB cables, headphones, and other small tech equipment when going on holiday. Hadn't thought of first aid suppliers for the handbag, going to do that now:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls
