Sainsbury's not honouring coupon

Sainsbury's sent me 6 coupons covering the next 6 weeks, each giving £15 off a £100 spend. There are exclusions to what can make up the £100- including no liqueurs, no spirits, no wine on their buy 6 save 25% offer, no alcohol full stop if in Scotland.
I filled up a trolley for delivery with boxes of wine (stock up for Xmas etc.) and the coupon wouldn't apply.
Finally got through to someone on the phone after 4 attempts and ages waiting to be told my trolley does not count for the discount as it's wine. Even though they concede the wine I have ordered is not listed as an exclusion, they admitted their coupon was wrong. The question is do they not have a legal obligation here to honour it?

No, they don't have a legal obligation to accept any transaction you offer them, in theory they can even refuse hard cash if they want and they can certainly refuse their own coupons.
But it's a bit of a nonsense that they don't make the coupons available for all their wares, and it's also a nonsense that they omitted the full list of exclusions on the coupons themselves, but I am sure there is a lot of small print buried deep in their website that will explain them.(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)0 -
Do you live close to the Scottish border? Your order might be fulfilled by a store in Scotland in that case.0

The margin on spirits is very slow, so it makes sense they'd exclude them - also, the laws in Scotland means promotions like this can't run on alcohol at all.
It's silly that the coupon didn't work - but I see why they've excluded spirits. I am aware that's not what the OP was buying though0 -

Given that the OP has filled a trolley I expect they know whether the store is in Scotland or not.0 -
Why not just pick wines with 25% off and save £25/100 instead of £15?0

The OP is having the order delivered, so must be buying it online as you can't have an in-store order delivered. You don't get told which store is fulfilling the order when buying online.0 -
I'd say if they don't mention it or point to a full list elsewhere, then they can't exclude products willy nilly.0

You could perhaps refer the matter to the ASA, Sainsburys might relent as a one-off. Then again, buying elsewhere will give you the £15 saving in my experience.0
