I've written three short novels and made a very small amount of money from them. I'm going to be writing some low priced reference books to see how they go. I'm working on the first one now but it will be a while before it's finished as it needs a fair amount of research and a lot of pics. It's very, very niche as well so will only appeal to a few people.

Its just the same as writing a normal book, is it not? I presume you write, send it to a publisher of sorts and they will then make it available to others.
Or in this day and age you might be able to just sell it as a pdf, but it would be so easily spread without others needing to pay, this is surely a bad idea...

I think Amazon has a tool which helps you format it and its free to do so no its quite different to traditional publishing

It's a whole different ball game to writing a normal book. You don't need the publisher. Amazon allows you to format and publish your book on their site. There are tools you can use to see how the book looks and whether you've formatted it correctly. You then upload it, set the price you want and away you go. I designed the covers for my books but if you don't have any design skills you might want to get someone to do it for you. There's a whole new market opened up in kindle books and some people are making a lot of money. If you can target your niche and write a short 'how to' book and sell it at 99p you're away. Some people are making a fortune telling other people how to cash in on the Kindle market and claiming that you can earn thousands.

Also some writers are selling their books in parts. You pay 99p for the first part and if you really get into the book and want to read more you pay a higher price for the rest of it.
