  • A friend of mine who is a long distance runner (v.long distance - he did the Marathon De Sables this year) recommends watermelon for DOMS. I looked it up and there have been studies that drinking watermelon juice an hour before exercise will reduce the intensity and duration of DOMS. haven't tried it myself yet - I would be peeing every 2 minutes during a run if I had a load of watermelon first

What did the end distance end up at ? 26 miles ? do you recall how far it was between Penyghent and Whernside ? thats the long bit...

    Yes its just over 26.

I dont know how far it was from Pennghent to Whernside, but its all downhill and flat and well signed and just before you start Whernside theres a nice stream with a drinks van and we stopped and soaked our feet and had a drink.

That section is long but by no means the hardest, its quite a pleasant section actually after the first climb. The most challenging both physically and emotionally was the final climb and run to the cairn on Ingleborough (ouch my feet!) and then initial downhill run back as its really tough rocky ground and you just want it to be over!!

Edit: Btw I ran in soloman speedcross and they were perfect for this as its 99% off road, but soles still sore. My friend ran in regular running shoes and suffered more

Don't train through DOMs... DOMs is just a sign of your muscles recovering, but while recovering they are obviously weaker so any further training has a higher injury risk and extremely limited scope for any gains.

You've used muscles that you haven't really had to demand so much from for a far while and now they're complaining :D

If you were 2 days on then it's awfully late for any immediate post event nutrition, baths, stretches etc...
If you're still feeling it now go and get checked for early onset rigor mortis
