Does marriage change credit rating?

I'm planning on buying my council flat in May next year but myself and my fiance were thinking about getting married before then. My credit rating is ok but he has a ccj against him and a bad credit record. If we get married before May will the credit agencies financially link us and bring my credit rating down?

Getting married won't automatically link your credit ratings. If you apply in joint names then obviously his credit history would be taken into account, as would be the case potentially if you had applied for joint financial products in the past.

If you are currently on the tenancy on your own, then you can apply for the Right to Buy in your sole name whether or not you are married. If that's the case then feel free to get married, but I would avoid applying for joint loans/current accounts etc for the time being, at least unti you have the mortgage sorted.
