Burst water supply in new home

Got the keys to my new home on friday 19th.
Everything seemed fine, but the water company called today and said there is a burst shared water supply pipe - has been like this since september.
Letters have been sent to previous owner apparrently, so they were aware but didn't tell me about this defect.
Have contacted my solicitors and asked the water company for some more information.
Surely I don't have to pay for this repair?
Any help massively appreciated!

'Caveat Emptor' applies here. Is the burst pipe located on your property?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

The questions I would think that need to be answered are when did you exchange contracts and when did this burst occur / when was vendor notified?
If burst occurred / vendor became aware after exchange of contracts, then they have an obligation to restore the property to the condition it was in at the point of exchange.
While the poster above references "caveat emptor", I would say that is a difficult one to call here - I assume that, given the average purchase takes 8-12 weeks, the survey and viewings were done some time in July or August, when the burst had not happened. Without being present in the intervening period, I can't really see how this can have any comeback on the buyer; surely the vendor should have notified sols or EA (or both) as soon as they became aware.0 -
