NHS Dental Cost Confusion

Hi there,

I went to the dentist today as I've been experiencing sever pain the last few days. Dentist took an X Ray and told me I have two options - to have the tooth extracted or get a root canal and crown. I have decided to go with the root canal as its always better to save the tooth. I have 3 further appointments booked to start this procedure but am confused on the costs. I paid £21.60 for the initial diagnosis and xray. My next appointment will be the root canal (I assume) at a cost of £59.10 and the next 2 appointments will be for the crown/fitting at an assumed cost of £256.50. Is this total of £337.20 correct or will the whole procedure cost £256.50?

Thanks for your help

Your dentist should have given you a treatment plan showing the treatment proposed and the cost.

I would expect that you would pay £21.60 for an emergency appointment and then a band 3 charge of £256.50 for the root canal/crown.

You should have been given a fp17dc form, which you sign, which details all the treatment necessary and total cost.

Sheramber is correct if the first appointment was an emergency one and the root treatment and crown are all going to be done together.

However many dentists will want to leave a period of time to make sure the toothbrush that is root filled settles down, typically up to three months. If this is the case then your estimate is correct.
  • Thank you sheramber and brook2jack for the clarification.
