Train cancellation

I bought an advance ticket for my son to use.
His train from Nottingham to London was cancelled. He was told by the station staff that he needed to buy a new ticket for the whole journey for the next train (not just the Nottingham to London part), which he did.
How does he go about claiming compensation / getting a refund?
And what can we get a refund for? £20.80 for the original fare or £49.10 for the new fare?

Firstly that advice was incorrect - EMT should have allowed him to travel on the next service and he would have been allowed to travel on subsequent connections as well, without buying a new ticket.
From NRE: " If delays occur while travelling, you will be allowed to take the next available train(s) to complete your journey." http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46546.aspx
Assuming it's East Midlands Trains - https://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/information/Delay-Repay/
Keep the original tickets, you can upload a scan via the form above.0
